Make Sure Your Pipes Are Clean

Keeping your kitchen sink draining properly is important. You don't want water backing up into it and possibly overflowing into your kitchen. There are some things that you can do to help ensure that the pipes in your kitchen stay clear and run the way that they should.

Ditch the Grease and Oil

While you may think that it's easiest to just dump any grease and oil down your sink, you will end up paying for it later. There are a few reasons for that. One is that the grease and oil will start to solidify as they cool. They will adhere onto the sides of the pipes, constricting the available area for the water to flow through. Another reason is that the grease and oil are "sticky." They will grab onto other things as they run down the pipes, causing even more restriction.

The best way to handle the grease and oil is to deposit it in a metal container until it cools or solidifies and then put it in your trash. If you must run it down the sink, do it with cold water running, and let the water run for a few minutes afterward, just to make sure that as much grease and oil gets pushed as far a distance as possible.

Clean Your Pipes

Another way you can handle your kitchen pipes is to clean them out. There are different ways that you can do this. One thing that you can do is to take advantage of the natural chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda. When you combine the two, they create carbon dioxide and bubble up.

So, to use them to clean your pipes, you will first need to dump some boiling water down the sink. That will help soften things up and move things along. Then dump some baking soda down the drain. You want to put the soda in before you put the vinegar in because you can't be sure that the baking soda could catch up to the vinegar. Once you have added the vinegar, cover the drain or plug it. You want for all that bubbling to go down the drain, not escape up. Let it sit for a few minutes and then you can pour more boiling water in your sink to let it work.

If your kitchen pipes get blocked, it can be a real pain. There are ways that you can keep them clean so that you don't have to worry about your sink overflowing.
